Life Enhancers Can Help You Lose Weight

Are "life enhancers" a part of your life? And what are life enhancers, you may ask. They are those things you need on a regular basis, things that make you feel good, things in your life that are accessible to you and give you a sense of well-being.
I have found that people who have life enhancers as a part of their daily lives have greater success in ending their emotional eating (eating that is not based in hunger). Doing good things for yourself fills you in ways that food cannot. Yes - fill your soul with life enhancers, instead of filling your mouth with food you do not need.
So the trick is in finding the life enhancers that will fill you and fulfill you. Here are some suggestions.
Create a positive environment for yourself. Surround yourself with happy colors, joyful music, photos of your favorite places, flowering plants, inspirational posters... you decide. And always wear clothes that are comfortable and make you feel good.
Write down a list of your accomplishments. And review it often! It's easy for us to get overwhelmed when all we look at is what we have left on our To Do list and forget to give ourselves credit for how much we've accomplished already.
Do something nice for yourself. Maybe it's a massage, a nap, or a bike ride. Go to one of your favorite places. Treat yourself with the same kindness and respect you would give to someone else that you really like. The important thing is to allow yourself to enjoy the experience. You'll defeat the whole purpose if you feel guilty about it.
Do something nice for someone else. Be a volunteer somewhere. Help out a neighbor. Call someone who might be lonely. Giving without the expectation of a reward always feels great.
Learn something new that will take you out of your comfort zone. What interests you that you have not taken the time to learn about? To learn is to grow, and that feels good. Be brave and expand your horizons!
Monitor your input. What are you reading, watching and listening to? Make sure you read uplifting books. Listen to encouraging CDs and podcasts. Attend inspiring workshops. What you pay attention to becomes your reality. So focus on what makes you happy and uplifts you. Pay attention that you are not focusing on negative things - perhaps stop watching the news. And while you're at it, avoid people who are whiners and complainers.
Get physically active. No - you do not need to run a marathon. But do get out of the house - go for a walk, ride a bike, do some gardening. You might even just fly a kite. The important thing is to get some exercise, because exercise produces endorphins that produce a feeling of well-being in the body. And being outside in the sunshine helps your body produce vitamin D, which enhances your health and feelings of happiness.
And most importantly, upgrade your diet. Stop eating processed foods which have little nutritional value in comparison to raw, organic fruits and vegetables. Start eating fresh produce, fish and meats instead of canned, bottled or boxed foods whenever possible. And don't forget to drink plenty of water, fresh juices and smoothies instead of caffeinated beverages, soda or energy drinks. By adding these nutrient-dense foods to your daily diet, you'll be supplying your body with good, healthy fuel which will naturally help you feel better and have more energy.
Life enhancers can be a lifeline to a happier, healthier you. Focus on them instead of food and see how your life changes for the better!

The Power of Berries

Fruit is a food group that gets a lot of attention for the abundance and variety of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals they offer. Today we are putting berries in the spotlight, not only because July is National Berry Month but because berries are a special category of fruit in their own right. These tiny fruits come in a few different varieties, are a small fruit loaded with nutrients, are full of flavor and are low in calories. Unlike other fruits, berries are versatile in that they can be prepared in a number of ways. Keeping your fridge stocked with blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries will give you endless options of ways you can incorporate these delicious tiny fruits into your meals and snacks.
commons.wikimedia.org
It is no doubt that berries are delicious on their own. Bring them in a baggie or small Tupperware to snack on during your busy day. Nuts such as almonds, walnuts or pecans pair well with the sweet, juicy berry. Toss them together in a bag so you have a snack full of vitamins, healthy fats and protein. Keep in mind that berries, like all fruits, must be washed prior to eating. However, this fruit is a little different than other fruits in that if you wash them all at once and place back in the fridge, they tend to get moldy fast. The proper way to prepare berries are to keep them in the refrigerator in the container you purchased them in, which usually is plastic with holes to get air in. Only wash them at the time you are about to eat them. Keeping the moisture on the berries creates a medium for mold growth and spoilage.
Berries are great additions to a lot of different foods. Vegetable salads, oatmeal, yogurt, and cereal are all meals in which you can incorporate berries. You can even place them on top of rice cakes or crackers to have as a quick snack. Spread a piece of whole wheat toast with almond butter and top with strawberries or blueberries to create a sweet and savory breakfast combination. It's easy to grab a handful of berries and toss them into these foods for added antioxidant power while also turning something dull into something flavorful and colorful.
Another way you can enjoy berries is to incorporate them into a fruit or green smoothie. Smoothies allow for quick and easy consumption of a nice sized portion of fruits and/or vegetables when you are on the go. Berries are great additions to green smoothies since they do a great job at complementing the leafy flavor with a sweet fruity taste.
Baking or pureeing berries is also a unique way to prepare this nutrient dense fruit. Toss a bunch into a pie dish alongside apples, peaches, pears or any other fruit you choose and bake in the oven. The flavors become enhanced and blended together to give you a warm dessert you can top with low fat whipped cream. Believe it or not, you can also jazz up a lean piece of meat by pureeing berries with some spices to create a sweet berry glaze. You can also puree berries to make your own homemade jam! Add ingredients like coconut flakes, flaxseed or low fat granola to create a delicious crunchy berry spread for waffles, toast or pancakes.
There you have it, endless ways to prepare this low calorie nutrient dense fruit that your whole family will enjoy. Berries are the perfect fruit to always have on hand when you need an extra boost, whether for flavor, nutrients or color!

10 Power Snacks That Burn Fat And Increase Metabolism

Don't let snacking sabotage your summer weight loss diet! Eating power snacks with the correct amount of nutrients and calories, will provide you with more energy and help bring about weight loss. Protein provides the raw material needed for the growth of lean muscle, which helps your body burn more calories.

commons.wikimedia.org
So, when you're hungry and in a hurry, grab one of these 10 power snacks that rev up your metabolism and keep you feeling full longer.
Soy chips. If edamame and your favorite nachos had a love child, soy chips would be it. Soy chips are high-fiber, low-fat power snacks. Bonus: soy protein helps facilitate weight loss and ensure the pounds lost are fat, rather than muscle by inhibiting the enzymes that cause fat deposits.
Grab a small handful of pistachios for a big punch of fiber, protein and healthy fats that will help you stay full longer without overeating. Perfect power snacks for when you are on-the-go!
Figs. Yes, you read that correctly. Dried figs are great power snacks. They're packed with fiber that will keep you full longer, and since they are naturally sweet, they'll satisfy your sugar cravings without derailing your diet.
Skip the sugar-packed 'fruit-on-the-bottom' options and go for a fat-free plain Greek yogurt. The dairy calcium helps promote weight loss and the high protein count will keep you full all afternoon. Add a dollop of honey or fresh fruit for the perfect post-dinner power snack indulgence.
Almonds. These power nuts are our go-to weight loss power snacks. Almonds are packed with protein that builds muscles and reduces food cravings. A handful of almonds is actually low in calories (10 almonds = approximate 78 calories) but filled with useful nutrients like Vitamin E and fiber.
Green tea. Skip you usual afternoon iced coffee and opt for a green tea. Green tea kicks your fat burning metabolism into high gear; in fact, studies show that folks who drink green tea as part of their weight loss diet lose twice as much weight as those who don't. Sip and slim down!
Yep, Popeye was right all along: a spinach salad is perfect for building muscle and losing weight. Spinach and other leafy fight free radicals and improve muscle recovery, which is key for building stronger muscles.
Avocados. Don't be misled! Yes, avocados DO contain fat, but this fat is actually a triple-fat burner. Here's the technical scoop: monounsaturated fat plumps up cell membranes, which helps to switch off the body's fat-storing hormones and switch on the fat-burning ones. Plus, these good fats boost metabolism by protecting cells from free radical damage. Holy guacamole, indeed!
For years, these large nuts have been overlooked in the mixed nut department. But no longer! Brazil nuts are actually powerful fat burners that help to boost the metabolism by converting thyroid hormones. Even better, brazil nuts bind to toxins that would otherwise lead to unsightly cellulite build up.
Chia seeds are the hottest trend in power snacking! These little seeds are packed with Omega-3 fats, fiber and protein, which fires up the metabolism and turns on glucagon, a fat-burning hormone. Grab chia seed power snacks for a quick, on-the-go fix.

Best Protein for Weight Loss and Healthy Living

Macronutrients are the major nutrients required by the human body. There are three types of macronutrients: protein, fat, and carbohydrates. In this article we will answer the questions:
What is protein?
commons.wikimedia.org
Why do we need protein?
What is the best protein for weight loss or for all around healthy living?
Protein is a necessary part of our diet. Protein is part of every cell in the body. It makes up the building blocks for our hormones and neurotransmitters. It is needed for muscle health, growth and recovery. A diet lacking in protein will result in illness and breakdown of the body.
Protein breaks down through the process of digestion into amino acids. There are a total of 20 amino acids. 12 of the amino acids can be made from carbohydrates, fats and other acids in your body. The other 8 amino acids are known as essential amino acids and you MUST get them from the food you eat - your body can't make them. Symptoms of a lack of protein and therefore a lack of essential amino acids can include:
muscle loss
hair loss
depressed immune system
low energy
decreased bone strength
There are two categories of proteins. Complete proteins provide all 20 amino acids. When you eat a complete protein the body can absorb 85-99% of the protein. Examples of complete proteins are beef, poultry, fish, milk cheese and yogurt. Sources for vegetarians include soy, hemp, tempeh and seitah. Incomplete proteins lack a variety of amino acids. These are plant-based proteins. Combining incomplete proteins can give you all 20 amino acids. Unfortunately, not all of it is digestible so the body cannot absorb as much of this type of protein.
How much protein should I eat?
According to Jonathan Bailor of The Calorie Myth: How to Eat More, Exercise Less, Lose Weight, and Live Better, "It's important to aim for a minimum serving of about 30 grams of protein at least 3 times a day. When we eat 30 grams or more of protein it provides enough leucine to rebuild our muscle tissue. Without adequate levels of leucine we risk losing muscle tissue. 100 - 200 grams of protein a day is needed depending on your body's needs. A smaller sedentary person needs less protein than the person who is actively bodybuilding.
Best Protein for Weight Loss and Healthy Living
The following are high quality sources of complete protein:
Grass-fed, organic beef - Grass-fed beef is cleaner, healthier and more flavorful than beef that is grain fed or grain finished.
Pastured chickens - this meat is rich in essential fatty acids and is a great source of protein. This can include any type of pastured poultry or wild game.
Pastured eggs - provides Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Omega-3, Vitamin E and Beta Carotene in higher levels than store-bought eggs.
Wild salmon is rich in Omega-3 and is a nutritious source of fat and protein.
Other seafood - protein in fish and shellfish is very easy to digest and the amino acids are more bioavailable (easier to absorb and use). Rich dietary source of omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA.
For those that enjoy that sort of thing - reptiles and amphibians are good protein sources and provide vitamins and minerals.
Greek yogurt - avoid yogurts with added sugars.
Shellfish - clams, oysters, mussels, snails - rich in iron, zinc, selenium, iodine omega 3, proteins.
Whey protein isolate - high protein concentration, good if you cannot get enough protein with whole foods.
Liver (from grass-fed or pastured animals) - a rich source of protein that also provides vitamin A, copper, choline, and B vitamins.
So eat your protein and enjoy eating real food! Stay tuned for future articles on fats and carbohydrates.

Eating Healthy On A Budget Is Possible

Let's Take a Look!
commons.wikimedia.org
To many people, the whole concept of 'eating healthy on a budget' might seem like a tough challenge. In fact, some more critical people dismiss the idea of being able to eat a wholesome healthy diet on a budget. This should not be a surprise since many healthy diets are marketed with a hefty price tag. You have to buy some 'special ingredients' or 'premium items' to eat healthy so you can lose weight or stay in great shape. The good news is eating healthy on a budget is not just possible but actually the default way to lose weight. You just have to stop thinking that just because getting healthy and lean is so prized by many people that it automatically has to come with a high price tag. Just by following the tips below, you can start eating healthy on a budget. That's right, you can enjoy a leaner, healthier lifestyle without breaking the bank.
Forget about 'organic' labels and focus on food quality
One of the biggest crazes in food retailing in recent years is the whole 'organic' food trend. While there is a lot to recommend in organic food, the benefits rarely warrant the steep jump in price you'd have to pay. We're talking about premiums that range from 25 percent all the way to three times the price of regular commercial produce. This fixation with organic food is one of the main reasons why a lot of people think that eating healthy on a budget is impossible. They automatically equate 'organic' with 'healthy food' and they think of the outrageous premiums you have to pay for organic food. Instead of focusing on organic labels, forget about them. Instead, focus on the quality of your food items. Insist on fresh food. Pay attention to how long the food item has been sitting at your grocery before deciding to buy. Fresh food is healthier food. Thankfully, given the huge numbers of coupon specials and other discount programs at grocers, eating healthy on a budget is not as hard as you think if you focus on high quality fresh food items.
Eat as many raw in season vegetables as possible
One of the biggest factors that drive the price of vegetables up and down is whether the vegetables in question are in season. When you shop for food and plan out your menu based solely on which food items are in season, you can go a long way in making your food bills shrink. Prices are quite low for food items in season because there is a huge glut of these items within a particular time frame. When there is a lot of supply and demand continues to be constant, the price of the food items dip. This applies to all sorts of food items from avocados to oranges to broccoli. Take advantage of this market reality so you can start eating healthy on a budget. Your hard-earned dollars will simply stretch much farther if you pursue this strategy.
Other Ideas For Eating Healthy On A Budget:
Eat very filling foods sold in bulk like potatoes
The great thing about potatoes is that you can buy them in bulk and save a ton of money that way. Plus, potatoes and other food items you can buy in bulk can fill you up for a longer period of time. Both these factors enable you to start eating healthy on a budget. Potatoes in bulk, like in sacks, cost much lower than if you were to buy potatoes on a pound per pound basis. Also, you can prepare potatoes in a wide variety of low calorie and low fat ways. If anything, you can eat lots of baked potatoes. Potatoes fill you up quickly and keeps you fuller longer. This suppresses your appetite and your calorie intake for the rest of the day is depressed. Keep this up for a long time and you can lose quite a bit of weight. If you are serious about eating healthy on a budget, you need to include bulk potatoes in your game plan.
Buy taste-boosting groceries in bulk
The great thing about the modern American grocery is that you can save quite a bit of money buying stuff in bulk. While buying in bulk is a bad idea when it comes to buying perishable vegetables and fruit, it is a great idea when buying taste boosters like herbs, mixes, and other grocery items. These items last a long time on your kitchen's shelf and they truly make potatoes, red rice, beans, and other low-cost staples come to life. Buying these taste-boosters in bulk help you save quite a bit of money. You also ensure that your low-fat, low-calories meals will be tastier and more satisfying because you have all the spices and seasonings you need to make such healthy meals live up to their fullest culinary potential. Make no mistake about it-if you are serious about eating healthy on a budget, you need to buy taste-boosting groceries in bulk.
Buy from farmers' markets late
'Buy from Farmers' markets?!' You might be rolling your eyes with this particular advice. After all, too many farmers' markets charge a steep premium for freshness and organic foods. Well, if you were to shop at farmers' markets early in the morning, you will have to pay a premium because that is when prices are the highest. However, once it gets around 3pm or 5pm in the afternoon, many of the farmers looking to unload their goods for the highest possible prices start getting antsy. Why? They don't want to lug perishable stuff back to storage. Storage costs money. They are more willing, at this late time in the afternoon, to offer steep discounts. Come late and scoop up fresh food items straight from the farm at rock bottom prices. This sure is one of the best ways to start eating healthy on a budget.
The good news about eating healthy on a budget is that with a little planning, you can enjoy great food at great prices. Take control of your diet and lifestyle today. Start buying the very best fresh food items without having to burn a hole in your pockets.

Sometimes mid-way in the march towards weight loss folks do lose motivation. Either they no longer feel active enough or can't control their food cravings. They fall off the wagon and tend to lose focus. It is therefore important to keep motivated through different methods of reading motivational books, thinking motivational thoughts, attending motivational lectures and generally remaining positive even when things look bleak.
There are very few weight loss programs that combine all these aspects and help you get started on your journey. Most concentrate on one or two aspects and ignore the other. This is the reason for the high failure rate of most people. If you had complete knowledge of all these points your chances of failure are low. Choose programs that focus on diet, exercise and motivation. You will find a higher rate of success and be happier doing it.

Also.... to reap the benefits of juicing you need to drink your juice, right after you juice it. This is because when you juice your foods, it's NOT like store bought juices, they are fresh and LIVE with powerful nutrients. Once air hits these nutrients, they begin to lose their value quickly. Your fresh juice also spoils quickly too. So, only juice when you are prepared to drink all of it within a few minutes.
One of the best known benefits of juicing is that incorporating natural fruit and vegetable juices a few times in one's daily diet in place of processed foods helps when trying to lose weight. I look forward to the benefits of juicing each day. I cannot imagine any other kind of drink that equals organic juice and the benefits it gives. I hope that you will try it, receive its wonderful benefits and enjoy it as much as I have.
Drinking juice made of kale, spinach, parsley, carrots, celery, and garlic is beneficial. These particular vegetables are high in vitamins B6, C, E and excellent sources of chromium, copper, and magnesium. These nutrients enhance digestion, boost metabolism and nurture healthy cells. They also help with detoxification that is essential when your body is in the process of shedding fat cells.
Kale juice is rich in all the essential vitamins required for our body. It's a source of iron, vitamin C, calcium and vitamin A. The benefits of juicing kale involves the prevention of anemia. The iron is easily absorbed by your body and thus, it alleviates the iron content of the blood, enhancing the manufacture of hemoglobin. Regular consumption of kale juice is essential for the health of teeth, gums and bones. Kale juice, being rich in vitamin A is prescribed as a prenatal nutritional requirement. Know more about the benefits of homemade organic juice.
The juice extracted from beetroot is one of the most nutrient laden juices that helps in improving the stamina of the body. The benefits of juicing beets pertain to curing digestive problems, improving blood circulation and lowering high blood pressure. Beetroot juice benefits are so experienced since it is rich in amino acids, minerals (magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, sodium etc.), vitamins and antioxidant. You can also combine it with spinach and radish juice.
The health benefits of juicing green cabbage focuses on relieving the pain of stomach ulcers. Cabbage juice is a great homeopathic treatment for this painful condition.
I am not saying that juicing is a guaranteed cure for any of the above ailments, in fact, juice recipes should be used only as a supplement to a doctor's medical treatment plan. Nevertheless, I believe the benefits of juicing will provide a nutritional supplement to your diet that will lead to a happier and healthier lifestyle.
But just reading about it will not improve your health and vitality. It is the type of thing that people become very excited about, go out and purchase the best juicer that money can buy only to have it sit in the cupboard collecting dust. Most people start off with the best of intentions but what is it exactly that prematurely destroys that momentum.
Well one is when you put the juicier up in the cabinet then it is easy to forget about. To fully enjoy the benefits of juicing, I strongly encourage you to leave the juicer out on your counter top and use it daily. This juice will be one of your greatest allies in healing. This will help you to establish a good habit which once you are used to doing it then it will become a normal part of your daily routine.
